Addiction Counselling – Stage Director Controls
Should you decide to grab hold of the train conductor’s outstretched hand, your life will begin to change. You will begin to notice, that the stage of your life is directed by others. Even the train conductor will have a say about your life.
The train conductor will pull you up into his train wagon. He will close the door behind the two of you. And he will welcome you on board his train, and offer you a seat.
Once you are comfortably sitting down, the train engine starts pulling the wagons along behind it. It will begin to pick-up speed as it goes down the tracks, carrying you along with it. It goes out through the same dark tunnel you first had entered through in the first place.
You can now see daylight once again!
Meanwhile, the train you are on keeps going down the tracks. It is going back, in the same direction you had come from, until it reaches the train station with you on board.
Once the train comes to a stop at the train station, you recognize that this is your stop. This is the station from where you had begun your journey. You get off from the train knowing that you have been brought back home!
We cannot control the sun in the sky, nor other people. Life is as if a play we see taking place on a stage. The play on the stage is not all written by us. It is not all about ourselves.
At times, the play on the stage of life brings tears to our eyes. The tears may even flow down our cheeks. With our tears, we try to place people up on the stage. We try to place one actor here at this end of the stage, the other over there at that end of the stage. We write out the lines for them to say, we hand out roles for the actors to play. We direct them to act as we would instruct them to.
Alas, our tears really do not have that much control over the actors on our stage of life. No matter how many tears we shed, no matter how we yell out our instructions at them the actors, we really do not have that much control over them. We are of good intentions; we want the play to unfold properly. The actors are of good intentions too. They want to shine on stage before us, and the public. When push comes to shove, we can all still disappoint each other…
Our tears do not have much control over the sun in the sky, nor over the actors we want to direct on stage, because there is much more than would meet the eye. We cannot see all that is going on behind the stage curtains. Behind the curtains, behind the scene of our lives, there are all sorts of other people doing their own thing back there.
There are always others behind the scene. There is the director of the play, the producer, the marketer, puppet masters, and writers for example. All these people work behind the scene of the stage of our life. They are the ones who truly control and direct what actually takes place on stage before the audience. No matter how many tears that flow down our cheeks, we just simply cannot control each one of the actors playing a role in the play of our lives.
The only real control we do have is over our own tears that flow down our cheeks. Just as we cannot control the sun from going to its different positions above our head up there up in the sky, we cannot control all that goes on up there on the stage of our lives… All we can really do is to ‘accept’ what is going on..
The Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.
