Addiction Counselling – Light Comes Towards You
When we look up to see ‘the Light at the end of the tunnel, it can seem far away; even too far away off in the distance. Hope can seem to be as if unreachable. When hope is covered by dark clouds and too far to touch, we can become discouraged.
After walking for a long ways in the darkness of the train tunnel, it is normal to become too exhausted to go on. Taking another step forward, so to reach the Light at the end of the tunnel, can seem very impossible to a weary soul. Then, you feel like you just cannot go on any further.
When it seems too far away for you to reach the other end of the tunnel, you must keep to the side of the tracks. In your moment of discouragement, keep your eyes up, and keep looking straight ahead anyways. Because that is when the Light will start coming towards you!
It should not come as any surprise to you. The Light at the end of the tunnel that comes to you is the light at the front of the train! You know that at the front of the train engine, there is a light. It is there, so to illuminate the tracks ahead of the train. The Train Engineer looks out on to the lit-up tracks before him, so to make sure all is well ahead.
Even when standing by the side of the tracks, the light on the train shines upon you. When the light shines upon you, the Train Conductor will signal the engineer to bring the train to a stop.
You actually do not need to do anything special, the train just stops! The Train Conductor will open the wagon door, come down off the little step, and stand by the side of the train. He will extend a hand to you, and say “all aboard”. That is when you know for sure, that the train has stopped especially for you.
The Conductor has ordered the train to stop especially for you, so to let you on. It is up to you to grab the Conductor’s hand and to get on the train. If you do not, the Conductor will get back in the train, and order the Engineer to make the train leave without you. And the train will leave you there, all alone in the dark tunnel.
So, either you accept to take the train conductor’s hand and get on board the train, or you do not. Either way it is up to you…
If you accept the Conductor’s offer to get on board, the train will bring you back to the Train Station. At the Train Station, there are people there that can help you find your way back home. Once you get back home, your family and friends will be happy to see you again, and they will welcome you. At home, it will be warm and dry, and you can have a warm meal and some hot coffee. At home, you can rest…
So, when you see the light coming towards you, know that the light represents hope. The train represents courage. The Train Station represents wisdom. The Train Conductor represents making the difference. And that home represents serenity.
The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference
